THEY KILLING COAST HIPHOP

If you have been following the coastal showbiz scene you might have noticed the vigorous hustle that hiphop guys are putting in their industry. For those in the dark let me enlighten you. For one, Odinare Bingwa has an album that sells on iTunes. Recently he was in Nairobi on a purely business trip to promote his album, not just in the streets but also in uptown music stores. Drulix on the otherside has ensured that Mtaani Mtopanga is the official street wear in Mombasa, now everyone want that cloth in their collection! On April 4th we launched Black City the mixtape at Yellow Ribbon Club. The event was successful. For those who missed, the whole session was recorded and video CDs will be out soon. On Sunday, Anonymous Vedette and Dizasta were selling their music CDs at Big Tree, that is, after killing the show and taking the whole crowd down with their incredible perfomance, which was all freestyle by the way. These are just a few examples here.

Now what am about to write next was not part of the content but I just had to:

So when I was in the middle of writing this article, I received a call from Vasatyle Man (google him) telling me about a big event going down at Mama Ngina drive. Immediately after the call, I received a whatsapp text from OB (Odinareh, just for the sake of those who are clueless about hiphop in Mombasa) sharing the link to the post on the event. This is the list of the artists going to grace the occassion:

SUSUMILA..
KIDIS..
CHIKUZEE..
NYOTA NDOGO
ALLY B..
DAZLAH
DOGORICHY
KIGOTO..
SHEMBWANA MASAUTI
WYNAS..
At the end of the list they added "na wasanii wengine wengi...."
I dont know if you guys see it, but from the list, there aint no single hiphop artists. If anything we have been categorized as the rest. That alone shows that hiphop is not the main music in Mombasa, we will always be ranked as the "the rest" regardless of the efforts that we put in. I mean, from the above named artists, who has an album? Now, who has that album on iTunes? Which one one them has a trending label in the streets? Which one of them has had a succesful mixtape launch? Who sells their music in the streets and people actually buy them? Which one of them has a musical show that promotes artists? Matter of fact which one them even does anything for the other artists?
We are trying our level best but it seems these guys are not noticing, or maybe they are just ignoring us. The original tittle of this article was supposed to be "The Rise of Coast Hiphop" but damn, I had to change. They killing us. Question is who?
