Hiphop is one place where there are so many kings, well, like I always say, the industry is too big for everyone. We can all fit in without squeezing, the space is enough. But in as much as we are all kings, obviously we cant all be in the same level. There are kings more powerful and stronger than others. And that is what we are going to be looking at today. What indicators show who is the best and who is not.
One terrible misunderstanding or a huge misconception that is believed by most hip hop fans in Mombasa is: they use a rappers ability to freestyle (battle) to determine his strength. Like I said that is just a mis-informed way of looking at things. I will tell you why.
I am a tourism student, and each semester I take 8 units. For instance this semester I had, Tourism Economics, Service Quality Management, Project Management, Entrepreneurial Skills, Strategic Management, French, Sales Management and finally Management Information System. So in my case, my strongpoints or the units that I would score highest (not necessarily an A but a mark higher than the other units) would be French and Sales Management. My weakest point is definitely Tourism Economics. I hope you are following am getting closer to my point.
Now, if my lecturer based my entire degree on the marks I scored in Tourism Economics, my result slip would indicate how much of a failure I am. And if he did the same thing on Sales or French you would think I am a genius. So, to get the clear and authentic grades the lecturer has to do an average of all that I scored in all units.
Relate that to a hip hop artist, his units are free-styling, battling, lyricism, flow, punchlines, stage performance, appearance, influence, marketing strategy, size of the fan base, creativity etc. If we select our best artist based on his ability to freestyle then don't you see all that you are leaving out? So are you doing justice, really!? There are rappers who can battle good, but there are those whose strong point is songwriting, so who is better than the other? You have to regard all the other indicators I mentioned above. Most importantly, you have to check his growth rate, is he moving with the rest on he's just stuck at the same damn point.
Having that in mind, tell me now, who is Mombasa's finest artist?
