Most of us have been complaining how we don't get enough airplay, we are not getting radio interviews and blaming presenters, but have you ever sad down and asked yourself why coast hip-hop is not getting enough airplay on our local FM stations?
For once, stop thinking like an artist and view yourself as a director of your radio station. You have a couple of bills that need to be paid, from the rent, to electricity to staff.......and to pay these bills you need to attract cooperates who will advertise through your radio. Now for you to get good money from the cooperate, they will need proof that people actually listen to your radio station, hence, they will play songs that people love, songs that are popular in the community.
Generally folks do have a wrong impression of hip-hop. They associate us with drugs and rowdiness, vulgar and abusive lyrics. Abroad artists release two versions of their tracks, clean and dirty version. Here folks have two versions too, the dirty version, and the censored version. Trust me that wont get on radio. Anyway that wasn't my point, what m trying to say is people (cooperates) do not want to associate simply because of our reputation. Radio do not want to play us because our lyrics are full of hate and abuses (well, not all of us re vulgar, but you know, stereotyping is real man) People who listen to radio want to hear things they can relate to; love, money, heartbreak, girls......not that alone, they want simple lyrics, easy to catch and understand. This is why Grandpa records and the likes of Jaguar are the most listened to (fact, even your mum sings Kigeugeu, yet she doesn't know a single line to your track). Hip-hop is deep, for the chosen few. If you do not appreciate lyricism you wont appreciate hip-hop.
To end my yapping, what am trynna say is, for once, lets stop following radio people. It's about time they followed us. You as an artist, work on your fan base, show people why they need to listen to you. Brand yourself like a star, make people respect your name, your hustles. Produce quality music, and videos too (if you have the resources). If you present yourself s a star people will treat you as one. I want us to forget about radio, and built our own legion of listeners and followers! Make people come to our shows, buy our music, celebrate and embrace the culture. We are living as slaves now, yet in our veins flow the blood of kings! We have the ability to create many listeners such that the cooperates and radio stations will come looking for us.
So instead of whining how radio is not playing you, switch it off, and build your own bunch of listeners. That radio will come looking for you.
Great piece, I think artists from the coast should all be cc this article. First of all most of song luck the element that would make a person wana listen to song over and over again. I am not saying that they are no good hip hop artist in coast I salute a few the likes Ohms Law among other I wont mention them coz the list is long. Ohms law as an example, his songs may be not popular as i expect but I like his style & lyrics I think i have all his song.
ReplyDeleteArtist from coast especially HIP HOP ones, they should know that you just not wake up in the morning and just putting lyrics on paper you should have a drive.... I know its hard to compose a song but I can differentiate a great song and a not so great song.
enough said.
